Boulder City’s Historic Railroad Track

Posted in Locations, Natural, Pet Friendly Places, Pet Photography, Tails of the Dog, Travel, Vegas with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on April 3, 2014 by vegasrockdog1

The current weather in Las Vegas is beyond spectacular and the perfect time of year for long walks. My favourite walk is the historic railroad track in Boulder City. The trail is flat and rises above Lake Mead where the views are breathtaking.  From the trailhead to the Hoover Dam parking garage is 3.7 miles long and takes you through the actual railroad tunnels. I simply love photography and what better way to document a walk than through beautiful photos. Jim, Galaxy, Thornton, Mr Twix, and myself had a wonderful morning.

Stay Hydrated with H2FidO

Super Zoo 2013 showcased many new products this year. When you think you’ve seen it all another great product comes on the market. One of those products was H2FidO portable pooch hydrator by Modgy. Their dog line includes collapsible bowls and water bottles.
The designs are eye catching, a plus when attracting customers to purchase. They’re bright with fun graphics and that’s how I like my dog products. Aesthetics aside these products are super functional. They’re resealable, refillable, BPA Free, portable, and innovative.

Both H2Fido dog bowl and water bottle are as flat as a pancake when not in use. To me that is important for saving space and weight in my bag, when I’m travelling, or out on walks and hikes.
H2Fido uses recyclable plastics that are strong and that can be clipped and used repeatedly. You can recycle them but the company states that you are going to want to hang on to their products.

Each hydration system comes with one 20 ounce bottle with sports cap, carabineer, and two re-sealable bowls. I was curious when I filled the bowl if it would actually collapse under the weight of the water. That was not the case it is incredibly sturdy on the floor. This feature makes it perfect for dog food too.

Why is PBA free important? BPA stands for bisphenol A. BPA is an industrial chemical that has been used to make certain plastics and resins since the 1960s. BPA is found in polycarbonate plastics and epoxy resins. Polycarbonate plastics are often used in containers that store food and beverages, such as water bottles. They may also be used in other consumer goods. Epoxy resins are used to coat the inside of metal products, such as food cans, bottle tops and water supply lines. Some dental sealants and composites also may contain BPA. Some research has shown that BPA can seep into food or beverages from containers that are made with BPA. Exposure to BPA is a concern because of possible health effects of BPA on the brain, behavior and prostate gland of fetuses, infants and children.

20130805-120348.jpg H2FidO is an attractive option for people with dogs and will make a great gift for all dog owners.
More importantly hydration for your pet is crucial even if you live in cooler climates and H2FidO will ensure you have the convenience of keeping your dog hydrated.

Our British Adventure

We’ve been quiet for a few weeks due to a fabulous trip that we took back to England. It was a family visit with a charity event and lots of fun thrown in for good measure. The only downside to our visit was that we didn’t travel with our dogs Galaxy and Thornton. So we decided to give them their own vacation with Kym’s Kritter Kare. Kym is wonderful and without her we would have never fully enjoyed our trip. With email and photo updates from Kym we felt very connected to them the entire time that we were away.

20110627-092730.jpg
Once I landed in England I was met by my family and whisked back to Sheffield to get a quick shower and head out to a rehearsal for the Zumbathon event that me and two of my sisters were holding. My sisters and I teach Zumba and the Zumbathon was planned to raise money for Neurocare and Cash for Kids. We had also asked attendees to donate pet supplies to benefit the Sheffield RSPCA. It was lovely to be able to do something for my hometown pet rescue facility.
20110627-093751.jpg

Our venue was the Sheffield City Hall and simply spectacular. We couldn’t have had a nicer staff to work with and as you can see from the photo below we had an incredible attendance. The two hour event went so quickly and the atmosphere was electrifying. To be able to perform with my sisters was so much fun and I can’t wait to do it again. We raised 1,920 pounds and collected a lot of pet supplies.

20110627-093202.jpg

I had been in touch with the Sheffield RSPCA prior to the event and was really excited to be able to meet Steve and the staff, deliver the supplies, and tour the facility. Impressed doesn’t even come close to how I feel about the facility and what they do for the animals that come in. The dogs have a two part kennel with the front of the kennel allowing them to get fresh air and look outside and then the rear of the kennel is inside the building. The floors are heated and they have their beds and toys for comfort. We saw some of the dogs and there was one in particular who caught our eye and that was Piglet. She had come in with mange and red raw skin. Oh she was cute and I was half expecting my husband to want to take her back to Vegas with us. She looked so healthy. The tour was interesting and it was nice for me and my family to be there together. The facility boasts kennels for the dogs, a maternity ward for the cats, an agility course, event space, shop, and an operating room.

20110627-100351.jpg

The Sheffield RSPCA is clean, bright, and welcoming. If ever feel it would upset you to go and look at the animals needing homes please put that concern aside. Once you see this great place and the care these animals get you will be so happy that the Sheffield RSPCA exists. I have to say it was one of the highlights of my trip. It left me wanting to get back to England to do more for them.

Every time I go home I love to see as much history as possible. We visited so many places and one thing I did notice no matter what city we were in was that the Jack Russell and Springer Spaniel were popular breed amongst others.

20110627-101813.jpg

Every time we saw a dog we were reminded how much we missed our own dogs and I have to say we had my sister’s dogs as a comfort. Below is Princess Madonna she slept with us every night. This trip was so memorable I cannot wait to get back.

Travel Like A Pup Star

Posted in Travel on April 7, 2011 by vegasrockdog1

The Pet-Only Airline!

Travelling long distance by plane with your dog is difficult particularly if your dog is over the cabin weight requirements. I would never put my dogs in the hold of a plane. If I can’t access my dogs during the flight then it’s not a method of transportation that I’d be comfortable with. Pets are transported in the same cargo hold as baggage and this area is not ventilated, heated, cooled, or pressurized in the same manner as the cabin. These factors for me personally do not add up to a safe environment for my dogs to travel in.  There are also guidelines for weather conditions, should it be extremely hot or cold some airlines will not fly your pet, and then there are  flight delays to contend with and your pet will be in the hold during this time.

So what other options do you really have aside from driving to your destination or leaving your dog behind? Well, there’s good news…PetAirways can be your answer to travelling like a pup star. This airline is specifically for your pet…not you…but your pet. They get to travel in a way that we would be envious of.  Your pet’s journey starts with you dropping your pet off at the Pet Lounge and once in the care of  the Pet Attendant they stay with them the entire trip until they reach their destination. They are given regular potty breaks prior to boarding and once your pet boards the plane it’s made comfortable and secure. This service is top-notch and every 15 minutes the attendant checks on your pet so that they can monitor how they’re doing during the flight. After landing your pet disembarks and is given another potty break and then they meet you at Pet Lounge. This type of travel for your pet is truly luxurious.

Currently PetAirways offer flights to these cities, Atlanta, Baltimore/Washington, Chicago, Denver, Fort Lauderdale, Hawthorne/Los Angeles, New York, Omaha, and Phoenix and flights start at $99.

Prior to travel you will need to visit the PetAirways site and take a look at their checklist. This will ensure that your pet is fully prepared before take off.

I can’t think of a better way for your pet to travel where they are looked after in a very special way and gives us as a pet owners absolute peace of mind. Grab your leash and walk on over to their site for more details.

Fashion and Function For Fido

Posted in Fashion, Health and Fitness, Pet Product Reviews, Safety, Travel, Vegas on July 9, 2010 by vegasrockdog1

As you probably know,  I love fashion for dogs and for the most part dressing our dogs is an extension of our own fashion sense.  However, there are some items out there that truly have a function and can benefit your dog.  Recently my little Thornton has been suffering allergies that were so severe that putting a tank top on her prevented her from taking her ever so limber back legs and scratching her sides.  She had a cone for a while to prevent chewing but it didn’t prevent her from using her back legs. So a tank top or tee-shirt can be an aid and so can boots and shoes for dogs.  Here in Vegas we experience the most extreme of heat and the pavement and asphalt retain the heat through the day. Only a couple of weeks ago I was talking to a couple with a German Shepherd and their dog started to lift his feet in pain from the heat of the parking lot.  The couple said to me “We don’t know why he does that”.  I know what you’re thinking but believe me common sense isn’t that common.  So I told them it was burning his feet and to pick him up and either choose not to bring him out in the heat or get him some boots.  Now the boots not only protect in the heat but if you walk anywhere that has rough terrain such as trails they serve to protect from anything that is rough and sharp.  I’ve looked at many version of boots and shoes and my favourite one for function is the Grip Trex design from Bark’n Boots TM.  I like how they really mimic the shape of a dog’s foot and the traction, protection, and ventilation that they offer.  They can be washed and you can purchase liners for them. They are known as the all terrain, all conditions, and all seasons boots.  If you care about the well-being of your dog and live in a hot climate or you love your trail walks these are the boots for your fido.

Pet Travel Made Easy

Posted in Travel with tags , , , , , , , on June 6, 2008 by vegasrockdog1

We dread leaving the Vegas Rock Dogs behind when we have to go out of town.  This Summer we are about to embark on a four day trip to California with Galaxy and Thornton.  Our trip is one for business and pleasure so planning ahead was crutial for the trip to go smoothly.  I was delighted that a lot of the work was done for me by some very helpful pet friendly sites.  Most of them covered pet friendly hotels, restaurants, attractions, beaches, and additional useful information.  I started looking for a hotel and came across this great site that listed the pet friendly hotels in my area with their pet policies and fees.  It made choosing a hotel very easy. As a tip I would check the reviews for the hotels as it can give you a good snap shot of the experience you can expect to have. One hotel that I checked had a review that said they were put in a hotel room near a stairwell where there was an incredible amount of foot traffic and strange noises.  This made her dog jumpy and caused a lot of barking. So, it’s worth reading the reviews and possibly picking up a tip or two.  Another site that I visited for pet friendly establishments and beaches was Pet Friendly Travel.  I particularly liked this site as it was easy to navigate and it covered just about everything you would need for travel.  Aside from the hotel and researching the area I created my packing list for Galaxy and Thornton.  This also included a visit to the vet for flea and tic medication for California and a first aid kit.  In order for you to have the easiest time preparing and packing you can download the list I created for this trip by clicking the link below.  As an aid to other pet travellers staying at these pet friendly hotels and establishments I am going to write my own reviews. We’ll be blogging about our Vegas Rock Dog trip…so keep posted and happy travelling.
